Toggle1. Make Your Intention Clear
Allah rewards your efforts when you purify your intention and make memorizing the Quran your top priority. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Actions are judged by intentions.” (Sahih Bukhari) So, streamline your intentions and be consistent in your efforts. Only then can you memorize it perfectly and retain it forever. This is the foremost task in memorization so you need to be excellent at this.
2. Develop Your Plan
Design a plan with a comprehensive document that you can adhere to, outlining the procedures and the timeframe required to commit the Quran to memory and accomplish your objective on time. For example, if you are memorizing Juz Amma surahs, divide the Juz into 4 equal parts and make a separate plan for each. Just target one part at a time. Create a plan with days, times, surahs, and revision sessions. You need to mention everything in your plan so you can easily follow it.
The professionals at Quran Grace have already designed hifz plans for different Quranic chapters as asked by the students. We also customize Hifz plans according to your needs.
3. Keep Your Goals Smart
Setting smart, quantifiable goals will help you remember what you have learned. If you are not physically and mentally prepared to take on the challenge, do not aim for larger portions. There are two different kinds of goals, so to successfully reach your long-term goals, concentrate on your short-term goals first.
You can start with three to five verses per day, progress to five to seven verses, gradually increase the daily lesson limit, and adjust your objectives accordingly. You will be able to combine your learned portions with great memory thanks to this.
4. Understand Tafseer
Memorizing becomes remarkably easy when you understand what you are learning. Therefore, concentrate on grasping the tafseer of Surahs before you begin learning the verses. Create a mind map for each Surah, highlighting the key points of each chapter. This will help you recall the points and fluently revise verses in sequence.
If you are not learning Tafseer, at least read out the translation of the surahs or overall summary to understand what you are memorizing.
5. Listen and Imitate the Recitation
There are innumerable recitation clips available online. Choose the quran recitation of any Qari who excels in Tajweed and Makharij. Secondly, opt for the one with a slow-paced tone so you can easily imitate and memorize perfectly. You can also download any reliable app or join YouTube channels to get daily updates on recitations you need to follow.
Some of the best reciters are Sheikh Al-Minshawi, Sheikh Al-Husary, and Sheikh Abdul Basit. Download or listen to their recitations and imitate them verse by verse.
6. Revise As Much As Possible
For excellent retention of verses, revise them as much as possible. Once you memorize 1 Surah, revise it 5 times right after your class, then 5 times after 5 hours of your class, and finally 5 times before sleeping.
Another way to revise verses to save them perfectly in memory is to revise them in all 5 daily prayers and additionally after Fajr for excellent results. As you move on, the revised portions will increase, and you will feel a need to organize your chapters. So it is better to allocate a special revision session every day, a few hours after the hifdh class.
Here is a sample revision plan for those who need help to create one.
- Daily Revision
Each of the Juz you have hifz should have its own day. So, every five days, you will have revised all the Juz. This is your daily revision. Always revise before starting your new memorisation. This keeps the old lessons strong and makes it easier to add new ones.
For example, if you have memorized Surah Al-Baqarah (ٱلْبَقَرَة), which is about two and a half Juz, dedicate at least two days to revising it.
- Weekly Revision
Make time over the weekend to go over everything you learned that week. This reinforces the new portions and ensures they are firmly lodged in your memory.
- Monthly Revision
Have a thorough revision session at the end of every month. Go through everything you have memorised so far. Although this may seem difficult at first, it gets easier as you go along and get to know the verses better.
7. Pray and Seek Allah’s Help
For the Quran memorization task, you have to continuously seek Allah’s help so you do not face any hurdle or difficulty created by Shaitaan. Recite the duas that are particularly for opening up the heart to absorb more. Read all the duas that are taught to us by Prophet Muhammad PBUH regarding education and knowledge.
Conclusion
Learning the verses of the Quran and never forgetting it is a result of continuous revision sessions that students normally ignore once they are done with the entire Quran hifz. So, make sure you keep on revising your lessons one after the other for excellent retention. Revise whenever you are free and consult a qualified Hifz teacher to take tests and ensure your perfection in Tajweed and Makharij.
